Soka Gakkai Tackles Climate Change
On January 10, the Seikyo Shimbun reported on the Soka Gakkai’s initiatives toward the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26), which will be held in November in Glasgow, UK, with preparatory meetings held in Italy. In recent years, SGI-UK has been reducing waste, cooperating with other Buddhist organizations to plant trees and engage in clean-up activities, as well as organizing online seminars on climate change. Soka Gakkai Italy is planning to host exhibitions to raise awareness at the grassroots level. The Soka Gakkai-affiliated Soka Amazon Institute runs reforestation projects, environment education programs among local schools and communities and organizes forums with UN Global Compact organizations. The Soka Gakkai in Japan is promoting a survey on climate change and is planning a project to help realize a low-carbon society.
