On January 1, in response to a magnitude 7.6 earthquake that hit the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture and surrounding areas of Central Japan, the Soka Gakkai set up emergency communication centers at the Soka Gakkai headquarters in Tokyo and also in affected areas. Seven Soka Gakkai facilities in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures served as evacuation centers to over 300 local residents. Since January 2, the Soka Gakkai has been delivering relief supplies such as food, water, blankets, sanitary goods, warm clothing and temporary toilet units to people in affected areas. On January 7, it was announced that the Soka Gakkai will donate 150 million yen (US$1,045,000) to 14 municipalities in Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures.
